A Blythewood couple were named South Carolina's Parents of the
Year as part of a six-year effort to honor parents nationwide.

The Rev. E. Ray Moore Jr. and Gail Pinckney Moore received their
award Sunday from U.S. Rep. Floyd Spence, R-S.C. Congress created
the honor in 1994 and established the 4th Sunday of July as Parents'
Day. Dozens of nominations are made in each state by local Parents'
Day Councils. State and national winners are then selected. Parents
from Nebraska and Maryland tied for the national honor this year.
The Moores were among the earliest home-schooling parents in the
country. They have been married 33 years and have four children:
E. Ray Moore III, 31 and attorney; Richard Moore, 26, a youth
minister; Dorothy Moore, 24, a writer for The State; and William
Moore, 20, currently attending Columbia International University.
The senior Ray Moore is a Gulf War veteran and a retired Army
Reserve chaplain. He is also director of the Exodus Mandate project,
a nationwide effort to encourage the removal of Christian children
from the public school system. Gail Moore teaches highschool English
at Ben Lippen School, a division of Columbia International University.
She was a home-school teacher from 1977 to 1994.
